LARGE WORK / GROOT WERK II

Opnieuw kwamen we naar Johan's atelier om te schilderen. Ik met stof en procion MX.
Mijn vrienden hielpen me met ophangen (spijkers in de muur anders bleef het niet hangen) en inpakken.

De stof is 275cm x 325 cm. Ik had geen plan gemaakt maar ging aan de slag. Het is een hele ervaring om zo'n groot doek te beschilderen. Ik wilde het af hebben aan het eind van de avond. En dat is gelukt!
Sophia maakte foto's van het hele proces. Erg leuk om te zien vind ik zelf.

The piece is 275 cm x 325 cm... There was no plan. I just painted and experienced it. It was so big and I had to work very fast. It took me 3 hours to make.

Hier werkt Johan. Hij is zwart-wit fotograaf. Op de foto zie je maar een derde van het totale atelier.
We komen een aantal keer naar zijn atelier om te schilderen. Monumentaal werk maken, monumentaal in de zin van GROOT. In deze ruimte jezelf verhouden tot het werk is een totaal ander gevoel dan wanneer je met je kwast voor een ezel staat.
Het hele lijf doet mee aan de schilderbeweging.

En sowieso zonder trapje zou het niet gelukt zijn...
Ik schat dat het werk 3 meter lang is.

Over 2 weken komen we weer. Mijn plan is om dan met Procion te gaan werken.

This is Johan's studio. He is black and white photographer. What you see is only one third of the studio.
We come there a couple of times to paint (and play, and walk... it's soooo big), making monumental work. Monumental in the sense of LARGE-BIG-HUGE.
To relate to the work in this space is a totally different feeling than when your stand in front of a easel. The whole body participates in the brush movements.

Without a ladder I would not have succeeded...
I estimate that the work is 3 meter long.

In about 2 weeks we will come back. My plan is to work with Procion than.

De huiswerk opdracht van de quilten speciaal cursus ging over spontaan werk maken, op papier. Dit schilderij gaat over omhullen - begrenzen. Zoals een jas je omhullen en begrenzen kan.
Aan alle kanten zie ik er sprookjesachtige figuren en dieren in en ben er erg tevreden over.
Ik heb er een canvas print van laten maken om te onderzoeken of ik het nog meer kan uitwerken met stof.

The homework assignment of the Quilten Speciaal course was about spontaneously working on paper.
This painting is about bound, border, wrap (too much English words and non of them is appropriate). Like a coat that surrounds you.
I am very pleased with it. On all sides I see fairy tale figures and animals.
I also have made a canvas print, to explore whether I can work further with fabric.

De 10e opdracht van de cursus Quilten Speciaal: maak een herfstquilt waarin het ontvangen herfststofje verwerkt wordt.

Jammer genoeg is dat bij mij niet gelukt - het herfststofje erin verwerken dan.

Na het maken van de ondergrond was het sowieso heel moeilijk om er iets passend-herfstigs bovenop te maken omdat ik de ondergrond te mooi vond om te bedekken. Daar gaat je plan!
Uiteindelijk heb ik het niet eens gebruikt omdat ik het liever zo wilde laten en heb een
2e ondergrond gemaakt die veel egaler is en meer passend.

Interessant vond ik het om te merken dat machinaal borduren totaal wegviel in de ondergrond.

Uiteindelijk is het dit geworden. Het werk heeft wat weg van spinnenwebben op een herfstochtend, vind ik.

The 10th assignment of the Quilts special course was making an autumn quilt. We had to use an autumn fabric in it. We all received the same one .
Unfortunately I did not succeed in that - in using that special fabric.

After making the surface it was very difficult to design something appropriate on top because I did not like to cover the surface. I liked it very much the way it is. There goes the plan!
Ultimately, I have not been using it and made a 2nd surface much smoother and more appropriate for the top.

I found it interesting to note that machine embroidery totally disappeared in the background by the way.
I think this work looks like cobwebs in the morning of an autumn day.

stitching to dye experiment I

Dit is mijn eerste experiment met het maken van een quilt (je) door het eerst te patchen en te stikken om het daarna pas te verven met Procion MX.

Voor dit experiment zijn verschillende katoenen en zijde stoffen gebruikt.
Het is wel belangrijk om goed te documenteren welk stofje waar zit omdat je het achteraf echt niet meer zo goed weet. Ik vergat een foto te maken voor het verven en omdat ik het maar zozo had gedocumenteerd (ik onthield het wel en anders zag ik het wel...) moet ik nu een beetje gokken welke stof waar zit.
Mijn volgend experiment (no II in de maak) is zo goed gedocumenteerd dat ik daardoor heel klein moet schrijven, om het op het blaadje te krijgen. En ondanks dat kleine schrijven past het toch niet op het blaadje waardoor ik dan weer verwijzingen maak op de achterkant, wat het er niet duidelijker op maakt en ik straks weer niet weet welk stofje het is. Maar dit terzijde.

In ieder geval kun je de zijden stoffen er goed uithalen. Die zijn rood-achtig geworden.
Het is geen low-water immersion of high-water immersion, maar het is direct op de stof geverfd met printpasta en 'nat' zonder printpasta. Na de eerste keer was ik niet tevreden en heb ik het nog eens geverfd.

This is a first stitching to dye experiment: first finishing a quilt (patch, stitch) and afterwards dyeing it with Procion MX.
For this experiment, various silk and cotton fabrics were used.
It is important to properly document the fabrics because after dyeing you really can't see which one is which. I forgot to make a picture before dyeing and because I had documented it so-so (I thought I would know or could see which one was which ...), It needs a little guessing.
My next experiment (no II) is so well documented that I had to write very small to get it on
1 page. And because it still did not fit that page with (unreadable) small writing, I went further at the back, so I probably need a little guessing again. But never mind.
Any way, you can see the silk fabric very good. Those are the redish ones.
It is not a low-water immersion or high-water immersion, but it is dyed directly on the fabrics with print paste and without (wet), both at the same time. After the first dye 'bath' I was not satisfied with the color so I dyed it twice.

Sinds een paar weken vergaar ik bergen stof voor mijn 'stitching to dye' project: eerst patchen, dan stikken en daarna verven. Zelfs het tafellinnen (incl. vlekken) wordt bewaard.

Het liefst wil je ook wat variatie in draad (lees: heel veel) dus gingen wij op zoek naar katoenen, zijde en viscose draad. Vorige week arriveerden de draadjes uit Engeland...



Nou leek dat een klus om uit te zoeken welk draadje voor wie bestemd was - we belegden er een 'avond' voor - maar het uitzoeken viel achteraf reuze mee. Met dank aan Marloes en Marjon . Marjon en Elly hebben trouwens met het 'stitching to dye' al heel wat geëxperimenteerd.

Omdat ik toch nieuwsgierig ben hoe het draad verft heb ik wat van de grote klossen afgehaald en in een verfbad gelegd...

Omdat het draad waarschijnlijk geen 'pdf' is (prepared for dyeing), heb ik het eerst een half uur in bad met voorwasmiddel en heet water geweekt (af en toe wat heen en weer bewegen), daarna in een bad met soda ash en vervolgens geverfd.

Since a few weeks I am gathering a lot of cloth for a 'stitching to dye' project: first patch, then stitch and then dye. Even the tablecloths (including patches) will be used.
Ideally you want some thread variation (read: a lot) so we went searching for cotton, silk and viscose thread. Last week the threads arrived from England ...

Well we thought it would be a big job to pick out which thread was for whom- we even planned an evening for it - but it was subsequently done in half an hour or so. Thanks to Marloes en Marjon .
Marjon and Elly already experimented a lot with this stitching to dye by the way.

I was curious how the thread would dye so I placed some in a dye bath ...
Because the thread is unlikely to be 'pdf' is (prepared for dyeing), The first half hour I put them in a bath with hot water for washing and soaking (sometimes moving a little back and forth), afterwords in soda ash and then dyed it.

'uit de naad' exhibition

Afgelopen vrijdag was de opening van de art quilt tentoonstelling 'uit de naad' in het gebouw: De Kunst, Achter de Vest in Alkmaar. De tentoonstelling was van 25 tot en met 30 september. Het werd georganiseerd door artquilt.nl op initiatief van Kunstfactor en De Kunst.

Deze tentoonstelling liep tegelijkertijd met de Algemene Tentoonstelling van het Quiltersgilde in de Grote Kerk vlakbij.

Er is een catalogus van de tentoonstelling uitgegeven. Het bijzondere eraan is - is dat niet alleen al het werk erin staat, maar ook dat de kunsthistoricus Henk Lijding het voorzien heeft van begeleidende teksten.

Nu ben ik eigenlijk wel nieuwsgierig wat een ander van zijn toelichting vindt. Helaas kwam dat idee pas op toen ik alweer thuis was.Was het ook niet interessant geweest om met het geschreven stuk het werk van een ander te bekijken?

Last Friday was the opening of the art quilt exhibition "uit de naad" in the building: De Kunst, Achter de vest in Alkmaar. The exhibition runs until September 30. This exhibition runs simultaneously with the General Exhibition of 'het Quiltersgilde' close by.

There is a catalog of the exhibition published. The special thing is - is that not only people's work is in it, but that an art historian called Henk Lijding has provided accompanying texts. I am curious what others think of there text. Unfortunately, that idea came when I was already home.
I would have been interesting to talk about the text with others.

Quilten speciaal

I wanted to finish a lot of unfinshed work this summer, but I realized that I did not dot that at all.
I was buzzy dyeing, dyeing and dyeing... Anyway the quilten speciaal course started again last week.

For homework we had to make two small selfportraits that would express two sides of our personality. I made an aspect of my personality from fathers side and one from mothers side.

I made something that resembles a box(brown colored book covers). The selfportraits are inside and on the outside I have put some fabric I made:



Front I: procion mx dyeing, fabric paint and foil made with a waxed-screenprint



Front II: a carved board clamp resist dyeing technique dyed with an ancient dye called safflower.

RUST paradise

A while ago at the quilten speciaal course the assignment was to make African inspired motives on all kinds of materials. Because I wanted to use it for something related to fabric, I designed some rust templates. My partner's company made them for me.

Today we went to his work to make some clamps for a workshop I will attend in August (Carved Board Clamp Resist at Zijdelings) and I saw the following .....





WOW.... obsolete tools.... I will come again with my tools...

Kesa

At the 'quilten speciaal' course we had to make a Kesa. A Kesa is a large shawl (?). In ancient times in Japan, Buddhist people wore one. Yesterday I saw a newspaper picture of Chinese monks and they wore one too.

A Kesa surrounds you. It is a mandala with yourself in the centre of it. There is a traditional way to design one, the more columns in your Kesa for instance the more important you are (the emperor has got 25 columns) and even there is a 'formula'about measures. That is because not every one has the same length. A Kesa has to be sown by hand.

Because there was only little time to make one, it is not made to measure.
I made a small Kesa 50x65 cm.

Traditionaly the columns have to be sown by hand. I used bondaweb (...). On top of the Kesa I used a few stitches to show that these stitches are the proper ones to sew the piece together, only I used it for embroidery.
